Run Forrest. Run.
The mythical Forrest Gump is welcomed to run in the Hillsboro 5K Run tomorrow but it’s a good bet he’d be a no-show.
Forrest wasn’t much for marathons anyway, let alone 5-K runs.
He just ran. (more…)

claims the sport is alternately easy and hard, good and bad, exciting and boring.
I find nothing about running easy.
My abbreviated attempt at running; let’s be honest here: it’s more like jogging, reduced to a walking jog at times, but my point here is: I have to convince myself that it is ever good.
And, thirdly: it is the most boring of pursuits.
But, I’m giving it a whirl.
More than a whirl, actually. I’m running in the Hillsboro 5K Run tomorrow morning.
Let’s be honest here: I’m participating in the event, along with my two daughters — Tena and Cassie. (more…)

September 10, 1948 — Sugar beet harvest was expected to begin Monday, September 20 in the Hillsboro area, according to American Crystal Sugar Co. representative R.W. Brandt. Plenty of help was available to harvest about 3,000 acres planted in Traill County, the largest crop ever planted locally. A new loading station had been erected along the Great Northern tracks just south of Hillsboro. Beets harvested locally would be processed in East Grand Forks or at the company’s new Moorhead, Minn. plant. Crop estimates suggested yields of 10 tons per acre, compared to last year’s average of 8.8 tons per acre. (more…)

Hwy. 200, south of the 4-way stop in Hillsboro, opened to traffic Tuesday morning.
The opening of the final stretch of road was heralded by the chimes at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Later in the day, state highway department crews were picking up signs along old 81 from the Mayville interchange north of Hillsboro to the Halstad interchange south of the city. The signs alerted motorists of the construction ahead. Not any more.
It’s smooth sailing through town now . . .
Sidewalks along the east side of Hwy. 200 will be poured Monday. Grass and trees will be planted in the next two weeks.
The $2.9 million project is expected to be completed in two weeks.
