Mueller Harvesting employs men of determination, grit

It all started with an advertisement for custom harvest help and in April a phone call to David Mueller of Mueller Harvesting of Hillsboro.
Why would anyone want the challenge of a custom harvest run from Oklahoma to Canada when fuel prices have risen to historic levels and the ranks of custom harvesters have thinned to half of what they were 10 years ago?
I hesitated just a bit, believing 25 years of owning, operating and serving as crew boss was enough. However, this kind of thousand mile journey gets in the blood.

Burros impressive in win over Thompson

Hillsboro erased a 14-6 deficit with 34 second quarter points as the Burros rolled to a convincing 46-22 over Thompson Tuesday in high school football.

It was the season opening game for both 9-man teams. The game was played on the Tommies’ home field.

After spotting Thompson the two first quarter TDs, the Burros ran through and around the Tommies in the pivotal second quarter.  (more…)

Hillsboro starts season with experienced team

Hillsboro’s volleyball team will be on familiar ground when they step on the court Tuesday in the Burros’ first match of the season.

The Burros open the 2008 season against Central Cass in the Hillsboro Events Center.

It’s not just the Events Center that’s familiar, tells first-year coach Billie Jo Haines.

This year’s team has a variety of strengths, experience being the greatest, Haines said.  (more…)

Oh, sweet corn.

There is a certain time of year when you’re allowed to serve a single food item for supper and call it a complete meal. Sweet corn — in and of itself — constitutes a meal.

Earlier this week, our family enjoyed the first fruits of the traditional summer harvest, feasting on the sweet yellow kernels, smothered in butter and sprinkled ever so lightly with salt. Pure bliss.  (more…)

60 YEARS AGO
August 13, 1948 — Hillsboro city supt. I.E. Lane reported that there was little difference in the quality of water between the city’s old wells and new ones. Tests conducted by UND labs showed a slighter degree of hardness and more sodium, which creates a greater laxative effect. The water sources will be blended in a new pump house, which was to be constructed as soon as materials were available.
Supt. Lars Grant announced that school in Hillsboro would start Tuesday, Sept. 7. Thirteen teachers were contracted to teach, including two new faculty members, Esther Halvorsen, 4th grade and James Holo, high school music.  (more…)

Douglas Holt, 55, Jacksonville, Fla., formerly of Mayville, N.D., died Sunday, August 24, 2008 at St. Vincent’s Medical Center, Jacksonville, after a brief struggle with cancer.
A memorial service was held Thursday, August 28, 2008 at Mayville Lutheran Church. Burial was in Mayville Cemetery.
Baker Funeral Home of Mayville was in charge of arrangements.

Harry Salisbury

Harry L. Salisbury, 87, Fargo, N.D., died Friday, August 15, 2008 at his home.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, August 19 at Olivet Lutheran Church, Fargo. Burial was at the Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, N.D.
The family suggests memorials to the Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Boulger Funeral Home of Fargo was in charge of arrangements.
