Sally Larson loves her new apartment so much she’ll show it on a moment’s notice.

Sally’s “swell” new apartment is in the far south end to Hillsboro Medical Center’s assisted living complex that opened this week.

The second floor apartment overlooks 3rd St. SE.

“I just love it. It’s so nice.”

Her move nearly complete, Sally was being helped over to the dining room at the other end of the building, where Wednesday’s hurried menu featured roast beef, ham and turkey sandwiches, complete with potato chips, ice cream bars and Kool-Aid.  (more…)

Traill County extension agent Ken Nichols expects the county’s small grain harvest will be completed by Monday. “It’s running good,” farmers are telling Nichols.
Wheat yields are running from 60 bu. to 100, with 70 and 80 bu. yields not uncommon.
The threat of rain was diminished this week, allowing farmers to complete the small grains harvest.

Apples to apples.

Traditionally, Hillsboro High School has recognized the two top-ranked graduates as valedictorian and salutatorian. That could change in the future — or it may not.

School board members agreed to take a closer look at the suggestion offered by two of its administrators – Supt. Mike Bitz and new high school principal Terry Baesler.  (more…)

As Hillsboro city commissioners start work on the 2009 budget, they’re likely to find a new line item in the police department budget.

By MICHELLE MCLEAN

At their regular meeting Monday night, Hillsboro city commissioners again touched on the idea of rate increases for water users to help finance future water plant improvements.

County building project declared dead issue

August 22, 2008 · Leave a Comment

By NEIL O. NELSON

Traill County’s top governing board this week put to rest an issue that, in large part, has dominated much of the news emanating from the Hillsboro-based courthouse over the last three years.

A plan that would have resolved the crowded conditions at the Traill County Courthouse while burdening taxpayers with a $7 million payback plan was unceremoniously dumped when Traill’s five commissioners on Tuesday once again failed to reach an accord on what was in the county’s best interests.

Instead of doing something, they did nothing, which — in the words of its board chairman, is still doing something.  (more…)

Who me?  No. Actually, I’ve been given a new lease on life.

I’m just not in a place in my life where I can employ my latest discovery.

Employ being the operative word here, folks.

A man of a thousand excuses, it’s funny it’s taken me this long to figure it out, me being as observant as I am.

Observant, I am.  (more…)

Over the Years

August 13, 1948 — Hillsboro city supt. I.E. Lane reported that there was little difference in the quality of water between the city’s old wells and new ones. Tests conducted by UND labs showed a slighter degree of hardness and more sodium, which creates a greater laxative effect. The water sources will be blended in a new pump house, which was to be constructed as soon as materials were available.
Supt. Lars Grant announced that school in Hillsboro would start Tuesday, Sept. 7. Thirteen teachers were contracted to teach, including two new faculty members, Esther Halvorsen, 4th grade and James Holo, high school music.  (more…)
