Wednesday’s early afternoon northbound BNSF train had to switch tracks to make room for the longer southbound train that was crossing the railroad bridge on the north edge of Hillsboro. A BNSF switchman cleared the tracks on the city’s south side.

7 historical preservation grants awarded

For the 10th year, the Traill County Historical Society has awarded grants to nonprofit organizations in the county willing to undertake historic preservation projects.
Recently, the grant committee awarded a total of $5,000 in grants to seven organizations. Grant requests totaled $13,908. (more…)

Traill, Caledonia officials move to resolve cemetery issue at county Poor Farm

Caretakers of the Caledonia Cemetery have extended an olive branch to Traill County hoping the good will gesture reaches the area residents who want to preserve the history at the handful of grave sites at what once was the county’s Poor Farm.
Ernie Vettel, Caledonia, said his community was prepared to place an engraved grave marker at the Caledonia Cemetery that recognizes the individuals buried at the Poor Farm cemetery. (more…)

Hillsboro Days promises full slate of ‘fun’ activities

Hillsboro’s annual summer celebration is just around the corner.
Hillsboro Days, a two-day annual affair highlighted by antique tractors and hard-charging horses pulling for cash prizes and claims of recognition given true champions, will unfold Friday, June 20 with the induction of three individuals into the Hillsboro Public School Hall of Fame.
Leif Christianson, Beulah Koering and Ralph Diehl will enter Hillsboro’s hall of fame during the annual program and banquet planned this year at St. John Church. (more…)

Rec District levy vote deserves our support

Tuesday’s ballot contains two questions for Hillsboro city voters — should the city commission minutes be published in the official newspaper and should the mill levy for the community recreation district be increased by six mills?
We urge a “yes” vote on both questions.
First, the matter of publishing the minutes of the city commission meetings — the choice is any easy one and one voters have routinely approved. (more…)

Empty nest — trial run.

My partner and I found ourselves living in an empty nest for four days this week. Our three teenagers flew the coop for football camp and Girls State. The silence was bliss — for a while.
Our trial run as empty nesters was not without its miscues. I reasonably figured that without three sleepy heads in their beds I could wash all the bed linens without having to rush. I didn’t rush; I simply added to my potentially light work load. I didn’t take advantage of the opportunity to be lazy. My mistake. (more…)

60 YEARS AGO
May 21, 1948 — Steady pitching from Carl Wildeman and Walter Gilbertson gave the Hillsboro Pirates a 7-2 win over Hatton in the Grand- Traill independent baseball league.
Harold Sorum planned a grand opening for his new restaurant with free coffee and doughnuts. Sorum’s Cafe featured the latest fixtures and equipment and offered five booths, two tables and 16 stools at the counter where fountain service was available. The business was located in the former Red Owl store.
Maurice Mueller, was ordained as a priest at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Fargo. The Hillsboro native was to celebrate his first Mass at his home parish, St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Hillsboro. (more…)
