PROUD VETERANS

Veterans were a large part of the Monday’s Memorial Day program at the Hillsboro Events Center. Standing solemnly and proudly at attention during parts of the program were George Vettel, Chuck Jones, Arne Sorum and Jim Kress. Many in the crowd participated in the cemetery ceremony before adjourning to the Vets Club for lunch over the noon hour.

Serving in the Color Guard Monday at Memorial Day services at the Hillsboro Events Center and at the cemetery were Lynn Kritzberger, Don Halverson, Wayne DickHoff, Rich Gehrke and Mert Svaleson. Gerald Olsen kept an eye on the annual proceedings.

Hillsboro runners participate in May 17 Fargo Marathon

A number of Hillsboro runners competed in this year’s Fargo Marathon, an event that attracted athletes from around the world.

More than 13,000 runners participated in the 2008 Fargo Marathon.

The Saturday, May 17 event started and ended at the FargoDome.

The Larry Mueller family of Hillsboro ran in the Fargo Marathon this year.

Running from the Mueller household were Larry, Maribeth, Darrin, Megan and Ethan.

“It was incredible, awesome,” said Larry Mueller.

“I’ve never experienced anything like it.” 

Hillsboro worried, too, over gas prices

Gas prices flirted with $4 this week in Hillsboro as the city — like the region and nation — braces for the record-high prices local station owners and managers fear will hit this summer.

The question is: how high will it go?

“Your guess is as good as mine,” said Cheryl Fugleberg, assistant manager at the Cenex C-Store in Hillsboro.

“Pick a number,” she said.

Aaron Lande to head Traill’s road department

After nearly five months, Traill County has a man to head its road and bridge department.

Aaron Lande, Mayville, last week accepted the contract offered by the county.

Lande has been working for the county highway department since May 2001. 

Admittedly not one to make much of anniversaries…

…largely because I forget them, especially wedding anniversaries, there was a date on the calendar this week that warranted my attention.

On May 25, 1968, 40 years ago to be exact, our ship returned from Vietnam.

60 YEARS AGO
May 21, 1948 — Steady pitching from Carl Wildeman and Walter Gilbertson gave the Hillsboro Pirates a 7-2 win over Hatton in the Grand- Traill independent baseball league.
Harold Sorum planned a grand opening for his new restaurant with free coffee and doughnuts. Sorum’s Cafe featured the latest fixtures and equipment and offered five booths, two tables and 16 stools at the counter where fountain service was available. The business was located in the former Red Owl store.
Maurice Mueller, was ordained as a priest at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Fargo. The Hillsboro native was to celebrate his first Mass at his home parish, St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Hillsboro.

DeEtta Gunderson, 64, Climax, Minn., died Monday, May 26, 2008 at her home under the care of hospice.
DeEtta Fae Hoberg was born June 2,Funeral services will be Saturday, May 31 at 9:30 a.m. at Climax Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Highland Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Cummings, N.D.

Kathleen “Kay” Jacobson, 87, Fargo, N.D., died Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at Bethany Homes, Fargo.
Funeral services will be Monday, June 2, at 2 p.m. at Pontoppidan Lutheran Church, Fargo. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Fargo.
