The Central Valley-Hillsboro high school baseball team this year is making a strong pitch for the spring sport.
They’re also the team to beat in Region 2, a league that includes teams like perennial baseball powerhouses Hatton-Northwood, MayPort-CG and Thompson.
The local high school baseball team is playing the game the way it was designed to be played.

More pickles than you can shake a hamburger bun at.
Faced with an inordinate supply of pickles, all sizes and shapes and all cooling in the same kitchen refrigerator, friends of the Vets Club foraged for ideas on how to resolve the sour predicament.
“We’re in a pickle all right,” admitted Barb Nelson, VFW Auxiliary member.
“We’ve got big pickles, little pickles, sliced pickles, whole pickles, sweet and sour pickles. You name ‘em, we’ve got ‘em.” (more…)

HHS golf coach Chris Eckart has a schedule written in pencil.
This spring’s weather has rewritten his team’s plans almost daily.
The Burro golfers did manage to hit the links a couple times in the past weeks.
Most recently, the girls golfed in Casselton Monday. Freshman Becca Heinitz finished 3rd with a 95 and senior Laura Schumacher placed 4th with a 97. Teammate Laura Bakke finished 9th at 102. First-time competitor Ashley Mooney was called on to be the Burros 4th score in the team race. (more…)

HHS track and field athletes competed in two track meets in the last week — scheduling around the worst of spring’s inclement weather.
On Monday, the Burros competed at Concordia College in the Fargo Shanley American Legion meet. The event was to have been held last Friday but cold, windy, wet weather forced postponement.
In a meet dominated by Class A teams, two HHS athletes managed to place — senior Kiley Coles placed 6th in the 1600 meters with a state qualifying time of 5:26.87 and 7th in the 800 meters (2:26.01) and senior Maggie McLean earned 8th in the javelin with a throw of 96 feet 1 inch. (more…)

Hillsboro’s city leaders were advised a decade ago that the municipal water treatment plant would need extensive repair or replacement — the sooner the better. The decision to do something about it has yet to be made.
We know the price tag won’t be cheap. We also know there is generous federal grant money available if the city joins a regional water system — as much as 70 percent of construction costs. (more…)

60 YEARS AGO
April 23, 1948 — Flooding along the Goose River in Hillsboro broke all records for sustained volume as the flood stage held for seven consecutive days. Even old timers didn’t recall floodwaters flowing this high for this long, reported the Banner.
A lilac planting program that was expected to be an annual event was set for mid-May with plans for a tree-planting ceremony, lilac queen pageant and a talent show on the courthouse lawn in Hillsboro. A.G. Arvold, founder of the Little Country Theater at NDAC was arranging for an NDAC student from each of the 53 counties in the state to coordinate the project in their home county. (more…)

Thelmer Marvin Finneseth, 65, Cummings, N.D., died Saturday, April 26, 2008 at the Veterans’ Affairs Medical Center, Fargo, N.D.
Funeral services were Friday, May 2 at Highland Lutheran Church, near Cummings, N.D. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Boulger Funeral Home of Fargo was in charge of arrangements.
