It’s been one year since a large crowd — and a marching band — gathered on the front lawn of the Hillsboro Medical Center to break ground for a $12.5 million expansion and remodeling project.
Another celebration is planned when the new facility opens — but that will have to wait a little longer. The improvement project is on track but slightly behind schedule. Contractors had hoped for a May 1 completion date to build a new two-story 36-bed nursing home and 16-unit assisted living complex adjacent the hospital and existing nursing home. (more…)

Grateful.
Renell Suchor has battled breast cancer for six years now — and through it all, she’s found reasons to be grateful.
In the on-going fight, she’s won a family that’s grown closer. She’s gained a sense of spirituality that’s been tested by suffering but still thrives. She’s earned a greater appreciation for her growing circle of friends in her adopted hometown of Hillsboro. (more…)

Arne Oien came armed with a trio of complaints at the Hillsboro City Commission meeting Monday night.
The Hillsboro resident said he had concerns about dogs running at large in the city. It was the second such complaint about dogs delivered to commissioners in as many meetings.
Oien said he’d been bit by a dog a year ago. “Dog owners don’t take responsibility,” he noted.
He added that many owners seem to ignore the city’s leash law. (more…)

The $2.9 million Hwy. 200 reconstruction project is set to begin Monday, May 12.
The NDDOT forecasts that the road will reopen to traffic by the 2nd week of September. In the meantime, Hillsboro residents and those who use the main north-south route through town will face detour signs.
Hwy. 200 north of Caledonia Avenue will be the first section to close during Phase 1 of the project. First and Second Avenues NE will be barricaded at Hwy. 200. Caledonia Avenue will remain open as the sole east-west crossing to and from downtown. (more…)

Before they were told the county would be helping slow the flow of water in the proposed Leirness-Steenerson Drain, a plan met with more skepticism than enthusiasm, Traill County commissioners this week took care of less-challenging housekeeping duties.
They reviewed gravel bids from four companies, tabled the purchase of a used pickup, appointed Dana Kaldor to the weed board, agreed with their sheriff that a caution should be issued against burning and learned they have six candidates for the top job in the highway department. (more…)

Landowners in southeastern Traill County ‑ by a 56-44 percent margin — recently approved the proposed Leirness-Steenerson Drain, a $2.75 million project running parallel with Highway 200 from Alton east to the Red River.
Construction on the drain is expected to start this summer. Work is scheduled to be completed by Sept. 15. (more…)

Valiants, will play three regular season games before the start of the post season next Saturday.

Two HHS/CV girls golfers placed at the Region 2 meet in Carrington May 5.
Senior Laura Bakke from Central Valley earned 4th and HHS sophomore Becca Heinitz finished 5th. The Burros were short a 4th golfer and could not place as a team in the race with seven other schools.
On the boys side May 6 at Carrington, the HCV team placed 7th among 11 teams. Kindred won the meet. Top scores for the Burros were posted by Jake Waters, Josh Mayo, Derek Zerface and Dominic Nelson. (more…)

60 YEARS AGO
April 23, 1948 — Flooding along the Goose River in Hillsboro broke all records for sustained volume as the flood stage held for seven consecutive days. Even old timers didn’t recall floodwaters flowing this high for this long, reported the Banner.
A lilac planting program that was expected to be an annual event was set for mid-May with plans for a tree-planting ceremony, lilac queen pageant and a talent show on the courthouse lawn in Hillsboro. A.G. Arvold, founder of the Little Country Theater at NDAC was arranging for an NDAC student from each of the 53 counties in the state to coordinate the project in their home county. (more…)

Walter F. Brend, 91, Mayville, N.D., formerly Cummings, N.D., died Friday, May 2, 2008 at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo.
Funeral services were Thursday, May 8 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Buxton. Burial was in Immanuel Cemetery No. 2 West, Buxton.
Baker Funeral Home of Mayville was in charge of arrangements.
