Burro tracksters team compete

HHS track and field athletes have competed in two recent track meets and one Burro runner has qualified for state.

Senior Kiley Coles ran a state-qualifying time of 5:33.5 in the 1600 meters Tuesday at the Central Cass Invitational. She won that event as well as the 800 meters (2:31.9) and placed 2nd in the 400 meters (1:04.6).

Coles has been a state qualifier every year since she was an 8th grader.

Teammate Rachel Meyer placed 3rd in the 800 and 1600 at Casselton. The freshman’s times were 2:41.7 and 5:59.4. Senior thrower Maggie McLean placed 4th in both the discus and javelin. Her distances were 93’5” and 94’1”. Sophomore Calli Lemm placed 6th in the 3200 meters with a time of 14:24.4.

The HHS girls scored 49 points as a team. Kindred won the CC meet with 101 points, followed by Oak Grove 83, Central Cass 82, Hatton-Northwood 75, Sargent Cental 68, Fargo Shanley 63 and Richland 60.

On the boys’ side, the Burros placed 2nd in two relays — 4×400 (4:12.03) and 4×800 (9:50.14). The relay runners included senior Billy Otto, sophomore Thomas Johnson, and freshmen Gary Suchor, Oakly Zink and Tyler Anderson.

Individually, Otto placed 3rd in the 800 meters (2:12) and Suchor placed 4th in the 400 meters (0:58.74).

Two Burro throwers, both juniors, also placed. Jake McLean earned 4th in the discus with a toss of 112’7”. Bill Breen placed 6th in the shot put with a throw of 38’1”.

As a team, the Burros scored 27 points. Oak Grove won the meet with 171 points, followed by Central Cass 91, Richland 90, Hatton-Northwood 81, Sargent Central 63 and Kindred 61.

Hillsboro’s track team also participated in the Oak Grove Lettermen’s Meet April 17.

Coles again scored big team points for the Burro girls, placing 1st in the 1600 (5:36.37), 1st in the 800 (2:32.42) and 4th in the 400 (1:05.76).

Maggie McLean added a 7th place finish in the javelin with a throw of 91’11” and a 6th place ribbon in the discus with a toss of 91’1”.

As a team the Burros scored 42 points. Lisbon won the meet with 175 points followed by Milnor-Wyndmere-Lidgerwood 162, Kindred 77, Richland 65, Oak Grove 64, Central Cass 46, Thompson 37, Hankinson 36 and MayPortCG 5.

On the boys side, the Burros earned 16 team points, finishing behind Lisbon 177, Oak Grove 105, Richland 98, Kindred 65, MWL 60, MPCG 56, Hankinson 55, Thompson 54 and Central Cass 37.

Placewinners for the Burros included the 4×800 relay team of Otto, Zink, Johnson and Suchor, 4th place, 9:50.79; Zink, 3200 meters, 5th, 12:07.32; Suchor, 400 meters, 6th, 0:58.21; and Otto, 800 meters, 6th, 2:12.68.

Coles and Otto also ran in the Dakota Relays in Bismarck April 19. Coles placed 4th in the 800 with a time of 2:28.69.
