Dr. Charles “Chuck” Breen has been named the state’s top family doctor by the North Dakota Academy of Family Physicians.
Breen will be presented the award this evening (Friday) at the group’s annual meeting in Fargo. The announcement is planned as a surprise for Breen but not for his patients, co-workers and family. (more…)

Traill County commissioners are cautiously optimistic the $7 million bond issue facing voters next week will be approved and construction can start this summer on the proposed new law enforcement center and accompanying office complex.
The commissioners realize, however, that there’s the real possibility the bond issue will be turned down. And any opportunity to relieve the crowded conditions at the courthouse will be shelved; for how long, is anyone’s guess. (more…)

It never had a fighting chance, the new jail we need in Traill County.
Too bad, too.
Deserving of a better fate, the proposed $7 million addition to the Traill County Courthouse that also features an entire second floor for the county’s Social Services agency will be dismissed like a mongrel dog.

60 YEARS AGO
March 26, 1948 — Hillsboro was chosen as the first in a series of talent shows to be conducted throughout the area by WDAY Radio, announced program manager Ken Kennedy. Gordon Falconer of Hillsboro Dry Cleaners was in charge of local tryouts. The local American Legion Post was sponsor of the Friday night “Talent Parade.”
Traill County agent R.L. Nelson reported “a lively interest” in the rat killing campaign slated for the month of April. Cities and townships were joining together in the eradication effort aimed at preserving food and feed supplies. Orders for poison bait would take two weeks to fill, Nelson said, noting help from state and federal services. (more…)

Sadie “Sarah” Erdmann, 93, Hillsboro, N.D., formerly of Enderlin, N.D., died Monday, March 31, 2008 at the Hillsboro Medical Center Long Term Care Facility.
Burial will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Watson Cemetery, near Leonard, N.D.
Wildeman Funeral Home of Hillsboro is in charge of arrangements.

Viola Thompson, 92, Appleton, Minn., formerly of Milan, Minn., died Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at the Appleton Nursing Home.
Funeral services were Friday, March 28, 2008 at Big Bend Lutheran Church, Big Bend, Minn. Burial was in the church cemetery.
