Skateboarders took their case for a skateland in Hillsboro to the streets Wednesday. Truth is, while the boys would like nothing better than a place of their own, an argument they would rather someone else made for them, Wednesday’s weather was too nice to pass up.
Many homeowners in the city would like the skateboarders to find a track they can call home, too. Better there than our driveways, homeowners are saying.
Meanwhile, motorists skirted the skateboarders this week while the boys on boards challenged Hillsboro’s streets.

Blanchard saw its bridge sent down the road.
Caledonia is being told its bridge is falling into the Goose River.

At their regular Monday night meeting, Hillsboro city commissioners discussed clarifying its liquor license transfer rules.
Susie Hjelle, owner and operator of Granny’s Bar and The Other Place, a banquet and catering facility, routinely transfers the license from her bar to the banquet hall next door.
One problem has been that her applications to transfer the license don’t necessarily follow the commission’s meeting schedule. Transfers must be approved by the commission, which meets the first and third Monday of each month. This can leave up to 20 days between meetings. (more…)

February 27, 1948 — Continuous winds throughout Traill County and the Red River Valley during the past week kept all county and side roads blocked, marooning travelers at farm houses and reducing business and social activities to a standstill. After a blizzard with 70 mph winds, snow removal crews had just cleared roads when a heavy wet snow fell, followed by freezing rain that turned highways into skating rinks. Ten travelers tried to follow a snowplow from Mayville to Hillsboro Sunday but were stranded at a farm until Tuesday afternoon.
Mile 26 Air Field in Alaska was renamed in memory of Hatton-born pilot-explorer Col. Carl Ben Eielsen. (more…)
