Sled dog teams make the run between Halstad and Grand Forks

Retracing history, sled dog racers last weekend challenged the Red River between Halstad and Grand Forks.

Three teams of 12 dogs each ran the 154-mile round-trip race as part of the Red River Sled Dog Derby.

En route to Grand Forks and back to Halstad the sled dog racers stopped at Frog Point on the Red.

More than 100 spectators were waiting for the sled dog teams at Belmont Park Saturday. The race from Grand Forks to Halstad was completed Sunday.  (more…)

Hall of fame adds 3 more to elite group

A Hillsboro farmer who cultivated meaningful legislation at the State Capitol, a teacher who pioneered special education in Traill County and a bandmaster who made music in the halls of Hillsboro High School 90 years ago are being inducted into the Hillsboro Public School Hall of Fame.

Ralph Diehl, Beulah Koering and Leif Christianson were elected to the Hillsboro hall of fame this week.

The 2008 induction ceremony will be held at St. John Lutheran Church, Hillsboro, Friday, June 20, 2008.  (more…)

Special assessment district for Hwy. 200 project redefined

At an hour-long meeting Monday, Hillsboro city commissioners amended the proposed assessment district for the Hwy. 200 reconstruction project.

Work on the north-south state road is set for this summer. It will be financed through state and federal grants and special assessments.

At the urging of several residents, commissioner Mike Lessard initiated the discussion prompting the change.  (more…)

CODE RED calls will test Traill’s emergency alert network

Dispatchers at the Traill County Sheriff’s office in Hillsboro, beginning Monday, will be testing the county’s emergency warning system.

The CODE RED exercise will start at noon on Monday (March 10), according to sheriff Mike Crocker.

Hillsboro and county residents are not to be alarmed if they receive a call from the Traill sheriff’s department.

Department personnel are just checking the county’s “Reverse 911” system that was installed to alert residents, either in selected areas or countywide, of an immediate threat, emergency or natural disaster.  (more…)

Clock ticking

Individuals interested in the future of Traill County are being offered an up close and personal look at plans for the proposed $7 million addition to the courthouse in Hillsboro.

The Power Point presentation that tells all, including what it will cost taxpayers, was first presented to residents of Hillsboro last night in the community room at the courthouse.  (more…)

Democratic-NPL candidates declare for N.D. Legislature

District 20 Democrats announced their plans for the 2008 elections this week.

State Representative Ole Aarsvold of Blanchard announced Sunday he will not seek re-election to the N.D. House. Aarsvold, first elected in 1988, is currently serving his 20th year in the House and is the second most senior member of the Democratic minority.

The two other incumbents — Senator Elroy Lindaas and Rep. Lee Kaldor, both of Mayville — announced they would run for re-election. (more…)

Grafton spoils Hillsboro’s return to Region 2 tourney

District 3 took it on the chin Monday at Grafton.

District 4 delivered the knockout blow.

Hillsboro, Thompson, Hatton-Northwood and Dakota Prairie all lost in Monday’s opening round of the Region 2 boys basketball tournament at Grafton.

Hatton-Northwood was the No. 1 seed out of District 3. The Thunder were eliminated by Park River, 68-46.

Dakota Prairie, regular season champ and No. 2 seed, was knocked out by North Border, 69-59. (more…)

60 YEARS AGO

February 27, 1948 — Continuous winds throughout Traill County and the Red River Valley during the past week kept all county and side roads blocked, marooning travelers at farm houses and reducing business and social activities to a standstill. After a blizzard with 70 mph winds, snow removal crews had just cleared roads when a heavy wet snow fell, followed by freezing rain that turned highways into skating rinks. Ten travelers tried to follow a snowplow from Mayville to Hillsboro Sunday but were stranded at a farm until Tuesday afternoon.

Mile 26 Air Field in Alaska was renamed in memory of Hatton-born pilot-explorer Col. Carl Ben Eielsen. (more…)

Harlin Sondrol, 76, Buxton, N.D., died Saturday, March 1, 2008 at the Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, N.D.
Funeral services will be Monday, March 10, 2008 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Reynolds. Burial will be at a later date at Greenwood Cemetery, Fisher, Minn.
Stennes Funeral Home of Climax, Minn. is in charge of arrangements.

Lucille Burley, 94, Arthur, N.D. died Friday, February 29, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Center in Arthur.
Funeral services were Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at First Presbyterian Church, Hunter. Burial was in Hunter Cemetery, Hunter.
Baker Funeral Home of Mayville was in charge of arrangements.
