Wind chill factors earlier this week, thanks to wind speeds of 15 to 25 to 47 mph, were in the neighborhood of 35 to 45 degrees below zero. It was colder in other parts of the state, according to reports. “It was cold enough in our neighborhood,” said Duane Sorum,
Tom Olsen, hatless, and the masked Kevin Peterson agreed. It was cold in their neighborhoods, too.

Thrift store on track in search of goals

Lighthouse Caring Ministries opened the Lighthouse Thrift Store four months ago.
Jeanne Stigen, Elise Pforr and Kathryn Strandberg would like to someday open another thrift store, somewhere in the Red River Valley, they’re not particularly concerned where.

Traill County locations set for Super Tuesday caucuses

Eligible voters in Traill County are reminded of the presidential caucuses scheduled Tuesday across District 20 and the state.
The presidential Preference Caucuses for District 20 Democrats and Republicans will be Hillsboro, Mayville, Portland and Galesburg in Traill County and at Hunter, Hope and Valley City in Cass, Steele and Barnes counties.
Traill County Republicans will vote in the Super Tuesday caucus at O’Brien Seed in Mayville. Voting is scheduled from 6:30 to 8 p.m. (more…)

Tough stretch of games ahead

Hillsboro is entering another stretch in their schedule where their conditioning will be tested.
Good thing this weekend is free of games.
The Burros, who played Fordville-Lankin last night, play at Cooperstown tonight (Friday).

Top finish in District 3 on the line

The District 3 girls basketball tournament starts in eight days at Mayville State University’s Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.
Coaches will determine the brackets Monday.
Picked to finish no higher than third in the district before the season started, the Hillsboro Burros, coached by Kyle Morehart, might be the second ranked team when the post season starts next week.

Burros rebound after loss to beat Valinats

A week ago Hillsboro was in the hunt for the District 3 title in girls basketball.
The Burros this week are scrambling for a top seed in the tourney that opens next Saturday (Feb. 9) in Mayville.
After being pummeled 64-26 by Dakota Prairie last Thursday, the Burros regained heir footing and ranking in the competitive district with a 67-54 victory over the Central Valley Valiants Friday at the Events Center. (more…)

NDHSAA rejects request to study 3-class plan for BB, VB

North Dakota High School Activities Association member schools voted Monday to halt a movement towards a three-class system for basketball and volleyball.
By a 78-55 margin, the association voted down a proposal to study a move to three classes for boys basketball, girls basketball and girls volleyball. All three sports currently compete in two classes. (more…)

Burro wrestlers battle-tested

Hillsboro’s wrestling team continues to collect the hardware — bringing home a 5th-place team trophy from the East-West tournament in New Salem last weekend.
Two Burros also claimed individual titles — 189-pound junior Andrew Grothmann and 135-pound senior Anthony Von Ruden. Junior Jake McLean finished runner-up at 160. (more…)

Born with a competitive spirit, I unfortunately lacked the competitive body needed for sports. Undeterred, I turned to another form of competition to channel my “hate-to-lose” attitude.
Use your brain, my dad always said.
