With unexpected harshness, even though warnings told of possible unsavory conditions, an early season squall Monday night raced through Hillsboro and much of the Red River Valley, rivaling the worst whiteouts of winters past.
The light snow pushed by 40 mph winds limited visibility, discouraged traffic and had area residents scurrying for cover.
Doug Ludwig, a veteran of decades of North Dakota’s harshest winters, considered leaving Halstad for Hillsboro soon after it turned dark Monday evening. He ever-so-carefully turned around and stayed in Halstad with his grandchildren.

The Vets Club potato dumpling feed Saturday promises to satisfy the many lovers of the much-sought-after Scandinavian gourmet treat while at the same time pledges to help a neighboring town in the Red River Valley.
Proceeds from the free-will offering will be given to the Northwood recovery fund. The city of Northwood was devastated by a tornado on Aug. 26. The recovery effort continues in the Grand Forks County town north and west of Hillsboro. (more…)

Seemingly at home on the hardwood basketball court of the Hillsboro High School gymnasium, bookended by two hoops and where legends were made along with four state championships, Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) appeared at home Monday, when he met with Hillsboro’s juniors and seniors.
Relating how small town life in Hillsboro is comparable with his hometown, Regent, in southwestern North Dakota and the town that beat Napoleon in the recently completed 9-man football playoffs, the North Dakota senator talked of the future of the state and today’s students, his own views on the UND Fighting Sioux nickname controversy, the war in Iraq, gay marriage, the probability of hunting with vice president Dick Cheney, and if the country was, indeed, ready for a woman president. Trusting that the Thanksgiving spirit will spur additional support, Angela Kritzberger remains convinced the community will raise $1.5 million in pledges for the Hillsboro Medical Center construction project by year’s end.
To reach that goal, another $312,000 is needed, Kritzberger reported Tuesday. Kritzberger is executive director of the HMC Foundation. (more…)

Hillsboro’s 74-year-old water tower is in need of repairs.
Commissioners approved a $5,500 repair job for this winter and planned for another $8,000 worth of work in 2008. McGuire Iron of Sioux Falls, S.D. recently did $4,500 in repairs.
A new circulating system should prevent problematic freeze-ups this winter, advised water commissioner Mike Lessard.
Speaking for the absent city supt. Jim Anderson, Lessard explained that the freeze-up problem can be easily remedied by installing a new stand pipe. (more…)

50 YEARS AGO
November 21, 1957 — The North Dakota State Highway Dept. announced that a new north-south interstate highway would run parallel Hwy. 81 from the Canadian border to South Dakota. Designated as I-31, the four-lane road was already under construction near Manvel. I-94, the east-west interstate in North Dakota, was scheduled to be completed by 1970.
As the number of influenza cases decreased in the community, the visiting ban was lifted at the Hillsboro hospital.
Mrs. James Porter, president of the Traill County 4-H Leaders Council, was elected president of the state council.
The American Legion Post held its annual Turkey Party — a turkey, chicken and ham raffle — for the Friday before Thanksgiving at the Hillsboro Armory. (more…)

Lena Sorlie, 100, Fergus Falls, Minn., formerly of Buxton, N.D., died Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at the Pioneer Retirement Community.
Funeral services were Friday, November 16 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Buxton. Burial was in Immanuel West Cemetery #2 at Buxton.
Glende-Nilson Funeral Home of Fergus Falls was in charge of arrangements.

50 YEARS AGO
October 31, 1957 — Hillsboro Community Hospital kicked off its annual fund drive. Chairman Art Magnuson announced a goal of $7,000 to fund a new heating system and window replacement. Forty-five volunteers were to assist with a door-to-door campaign.
Our Savior’s Lutheran Church of Hillsboro celebrated the laying of the cornerstone for its new education building. The stone was engraved with “1957″ and Psalm 27, “Teach me thy way, O Lord.”
Hillsboro High School’s football team won the RRVC crown with a 3-3-1 record. The Burros were best in the conference with wins over Mayville, Hatton and Portland and a tie against Larimore. They lost exhibition games again East Grand Forks, Cooperstown and Oak Grove. (more…)
