Seemingly at home on the hardwood basketball court of the Hillsboro High School gymnasium, bookended by two hoops and where legends were made along with four state championships, Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) appeared at home Monday, when he met with Hillsboro’s juniors and seniors.

Relating how small town life in Hillsboro is comparable with his hometown, Regent, in southwestern North Dakota and the town that beat Napoleon in the recently completed 9-man football playoffs, the North Dakota senator talked of the future of the state and today’s students, his own views on the UND Fighting Sioux nickname controversy, the war in Iraq, gay marriage, the probability of hunting with vice president Dick Cheney, and if the country was, indeed, ready for a woman president.  (more…)

Hillsboro students fill ‘thanks banks’ for Northwood

Hillsboro Elementary students and teachers filled “thanks banks” for four days last week and raised $504 for students in the tornado-ravaged town of Northwood.

A Hillsboro teacher suggested the students use their word of the month — “compassion” — and give thanks to the people of Northwood for their show of courage during their recovery from the August 26 tornado.  (more…)

HMC drive edges closer toward goal

Trusting that the Thanksgiving spirit will spur additional support, Angela Kritzberger remains convinced the community will raise $1.5 million in pledges for the Hillsboro Medical Center construction project by year’s end.

To reach that goal, another $312,000 is needed, Kritzberger reported Tuesday. Kritzberger is executive director of the HMC Foundation.  (more…)

Water tower, water plant back on city commission’s agenda

Hillsboro’s 74-year-old water tower is in need of repairs.
Commissioners approved a $5,500 repair job for this winter and planned for another $8,000 worth of work in 2008. McGuire Iron of Sioux Falls, S.D. recently did $4,500 in repairs.
A new circulating system should prevent problematic freeze-ups this winter, advised water commissioner Mike Lessard.
Speaking for the absent city supt. Jim Anderson, Lessard explained that the freeze-up problem can be easily remedied by installing a new stand pipe. (more…)

50 YEARS AGO
November 21, 1957 — The North Dakota State Highway Dept. announced that a new north-south interstate highway would run parallel Hwy. 81 from the Canadian border to South Dakota. Designated as I-31, the four-lane road was already under construction near Manvel. I-94, the east-west interstate in North Dakota, was scheduled to be completed by 1970.
As the number of influenza cases decreased in the community, the visiting ban was lifted at the Hillsboro hospital.
Mrs. James Porter, president of the Traill County 4-H Leaders Council, was elected president of the state council.
The American Legion Post held its annual Turkey Party — a turkey, chicken and ham raffle — for the Friday before Thanksgiving at the Hillsboro Armory. (more…)
