October 31, 1957 — Hillsboro Community Hospital kicked off its annual fund drive. Chairman Art Magnuson announced a goal of $7,000 to fund a new heating system and window replacement. Forty-five volunteers were to assist with a door-to-door campaign.

As we gather round the dinner table for Turkey Day, it’s appropriate to pause and ponder the purpose of the day — thanksgiving.
It’s something we should do more than once a year — count our many blessings and give thanks.
What am I thankful for?
At the top of my list you won’t find things. What I am most thankful for are the people who make my life interesting, entertaining, fulfilling — complete.
A husband who knows when to laugh with me and when to say nothing at all. A true partner who’s known me since I was five years old and still thinks I’m special. (more…)

Thanksgiving is much more than a big meal with family and friends. It’s a time to reflect on, and be thankful for, all the good things you have. It’s important to be grateful, not just on Thanksgiving, but each and every day. Rather than lamenting what you feel is lacking in your life, begin each new day by developing an attitude of gratitude. Take inventory of your blessings and you will be surprised at just how much you have to be thankful for.
If you have enough to eat, a place to live, a way to get around, people who care about you, or people you care about, then you are wealthy. If you lack any of these elements, you must still be grateful for what you do have, while striving to obtain whatever is absent. (more…)

Duane Haugerud is certain the chairs in the meeting room of the Vets Club are the same chairs that circled the dance floor in the lower lever of the former 7 Steps municipal liquor store 45 years ago.
Wayne DickHoff, Legion commander, and Neil Nelson, Vets Club director, who remember the teen canteen dances, agree with Haugerud, the VFW post quartermaster.
The chairs, which were also used at different post events in the old building, are older than the current Vets Club building. (more…)

Hillsboro’s school board members were in a generous mood last week.
Accommodating, even.
Paula Pederson, elementary principal, came to last week’s school board meeting hoping she could convince the education board that the purchase of a $3,000 Smart Board for the grade school would be a wise investment for next year.
Board members Paul Fossum, Tracy Buzick, Dr. Tim Luithle, Stacey Riemer and Don Hanson, Jr., needed little convincing.
In fact, they determined the school needed the Smart Board this year. (more…)
