Veterans Day observances planned in Hillsboro

Hillsboro will observe Veterans Day with two special ceremonies.In keeping with long-held tradition, a public program is planned for Sunday, November 11 at 11 a.m. at the Hillsboro Events Center. The Hillsboro VFW Post sponsors the ceremony.

Lunch will be served at the Hillsboro Vets Club after the ceremony. The public is welcome to attend.

In keeping with a newer tradition, a student program is planned for Thursday, November 8 at 9:45 a.m. at the Hillsboro Events Center.

The Hillsboro VFW initiated the special observance in 2001 as a patriotism program for youth.

Students in grades K-12 are encouraged to invite a veteran to attend the program as their guest.

The program includes a color guard with members of the VFW and American Legion posts and their auxiliaries, a guest speaker, student readings and student musical selections.

Experiencing America’s sweet and salty customs

Many know that Hillsboro High School welcomes exchange students every year.

It’s a matter of real Burro pride.

In fact, the high school has had so much success with the program, the EF (Education First) Foundation for Foreign Study named it School of the Year for the 2006-2007 academic year.

Superintendent Mike Bitz said that the EF Foundation for Foreign Study is “the only program that we have used.”  It offers high school students from countries outside the U.S. the chance to experience American culture. Since 1979, it’s been responsible for sending numerous students to discover what American high school is like.  (more…)

Hillsboro merchants giving away 40 birds

Well into its fifth decade of celebrating Thanksgiving, the Hillsboro Banner is once again coordinating its much-anticipated and much-appreciated turkey giveaway.
The Banner and 40 Hillsboro merchants are giving away turkeys this year. The turkey coupons are included in a two-page spread on pages 8-9 of this week’s Banner.
Readers of the Banner have until noon Wednesday, Nov. 14 to deposit the coupons in each of the stores. The winners, who will be contacted and listed in the Banner that week, can pick up their turkeys at Dale’s Food Pride, starting Friday, Nov. 17.  (more…)

Driver killed in train-truck crash

A 60-year-old Donna, Texas man was killed October 25 when the grain truck he was driving collided with a southbound BNSF train near Hillsboro.

Authorities identified the victim as Salvador R. Perez, Sr. He was working at the Peter and Jason Lovas farm.

The accident happened about four miles south of Hillsboro at 12:15 p.m. The empty grain truck was headed east on the farmstead’s driveway. The train was hauling empty cars. The train’s engine struck the trailer the semitruck was hauling.

Perez apparently did not see or hear the approaching train, reported N.D. Hwy. Patrol officer Kyle Stern. He failed to yield the right of way at the crossing. Perez was pronounced dead at the scene.  (more…)

Hillsboro stores, streets crowded with ghosts, goblins

Hillsboro certainly didn’t shortchange anyone again this Halloween.

Cheap, this town isn’t, said one fan of Halloween.

Families and more families and more kids in costume than you can shake a broom stick at were downtown Wednesday afternoon and all around town in the early evening hours as Halloween brought out the best of the season in everyone.

It certainly brought out the candy.

Record numbers darted in and out of businesses, both downtown and at the interstate interchange. Several business had to make a mad dash to the store for more candy. (more…)

Hillsboro’s call for ambulance manager answered

After your first taste, it gets in your blood.

That’s Jane Halvorson’s stance on paramedicine.

Halvorson not only has an outstanding taste for her profession, which she claims “couldn’t be more rewarding,” but also had a craving to move back to the area she grew up in for quite some time.

Previously having worked in Kansas City, Missouri, she lucked out, no doubt. Likewise, did Hillsboro Medical Center.

The facility, currently undergoing a massive remodeling/addition project, recently welcomed Halvorson on board as the newly created position — ambulance manager/paramedic.  (more…)
