Unique best describes the latest business to locate in downtown Hillsboro. Hometown Aditude has moved into the old Hillsboro National Bank building at 15 W. Caledonia. The new business in an old building embraces uniqueness. How many small towns can boast of an advertising and marketing agency with an online presence? That’s unique in itself. In locating here, Hometown Aditude has occupied a 120-year-old building that has been largely standing empty for a number of years. And large it is. It ostensibly became larger in recent weeks when the interior on the main level was gutted, making room for an office straight out of an advertisement in the New Yorker, or closer to home, The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead’s From House to HOME magazine Painted in signature colors uniquely labeled Relentless Olive, Restrained Gold and Lemon Chiffon, the walls separating the hardwood floor from its tin ceiling embrace, welcome and encourage a creative and energizing environment, an atmosphere essential in the creative process of an advertising agency. Unlike most teams in the area that have fallen along the wayside in the statewide football playoffs, the Hillsboro Burros are still in the mix.
Ditched, dropped or discarded along the Road to the Dome are the likes of MayPort, Hatton-Northwood, Finley-Sharon-Hope-Page and Central Valley. Nothing against the Patriots, Thunder and Spartans, all respectable teams who were eliminated last weekend or the Valiants who were denied a shot at the postseason this year, but it is the Hillsboro Burros — once again for the record — who is the last team standing in the Red River Valley.
The Burros, who depart the RRV for Napoleon Saturday in the quarterfinal round of the 9-man playoffs, are not only one of a handful teams still playing, but just one of a few unbeaten teams in the state. Undefeated and still playing for all the marbles are Napoleon, Mott-Regent, Divide County, St. John and North Border, in addition to Hillsboro, in 9-man; Harvey in Class A; Minot Ryan in Class AA; and Fargo South and Minot in Class AAA. Bolstered by more than 500 donations, Hillsboro Medical Center Foundation is making a final push to reach a fundraising goal of $1.5 million by year’s end. Their target — $350,000 in gifts and pledges before we ring in 2008.
The fundraising campaign — the largest community effort ever undertaken in Hillsboro — will help finance a $12.5 million construction project at HMC — a new nursing home, new assisted living apartments and a remodeled hospital.
As construction workers push to “button up” the structure for winter, fundraisers are working to “nail down” more donations by Dec. 31. (more…)

Already under the spotlight this year, Hillsboro’s football team next year will be playing under new and brighter lights.
The Hillsboro School will have new flood lights over its football field, starting with the 2008 season.
Waslien Electric, with shops in Buxton and Hillsboro, will add new flood lights to the field’s 10 tall poles next spring.
Waslien’s low bid of $11,560 was accepted by the Hillsboro School Board last week. Nelson Electric and J&L Electric, both local firms, also bid on the new football field lights.
“It’s not cheap, but the lights needed to be upgraded,” said Hillsboro School superintendent Mike Bitz. The Buxton company’s bid was lower than expected and much appreciated, said Bitz. (more…)

With flu season here, it’s time to protect yourself from influenza and its complications by getting a flu shot, says Brenda Stallmen, director of the Traill District Health Unit.
Community flu shot clinics started across the county last week.
Flu is an infection of the nose, throat, and lungs that affect millions each year. It is highly contagious and occurs mainly in the late fall, winter or early spring, said Stallmen.
Influenza, or flu, is easily spread from person to person. When someone sneezes, coughs, or even talks, Stallmen tells, the influenza virus is released into the air and may be inhaled by anyone nearby.
The flu affects all age groups and causes moderate to severe illness, loss of school and work, and complications such as pneumonia, hospitalization, and even death. (more…)
