By ANNA AUSTIN
When Jesse and Bridgette (Breidenbach) Miller were told during an ultrasound that their unborn daughter, diagnosed with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), would have only a 50 percent chance of living if she was born at 40 weeks, they knew it was going to be an ongoing battle for her life.
CDH is a severe birth defect that affects one in 2,500 babies. Many CDH babies have minor lasting health problems such as feeding aversions, asthma, scoliosis, or short-term oxygen dependency. A small number have one or more major lasting health problems such as ventilator dependency, brain damage, or hearing problems. CDH can occur alone or with other birth defects, and sometimes as part of a syndrome. (more…)

County commissions’ record of preserving history defended

June 1, 2007 · Leave a Comment

EDITOR: Much has been said in the past couple years about Traill County and its resistance to preserve history.
I have had a unique vantage point few do, owing to the fact that I have served on the County Historical Society Board and have also been a county highway department employee for the past 22 years. It has been personally disheartening to have the county portrayed as not encouraging preservation.
It was in fact the County Commission 42 years ago that allowed a fledging historical organization to have a stable annual income through a county wide mill levy, which has allowed the Historical Society to flourish for the past four decades. (more…)

Three fields of barley and corn growing near Hillsboro this season were planted with a different sort of harvest in mind.
The 32 acres comprise a “growing project” for the Foods Resource Bank, a non-government humanitarian organization with a relatively new “Christian Response to World Hunger.”
FRB works on behalf of 16 mainline Christian denominations or their agencies “to mobilize and increase the resources needed to support smallholder, agricultural, food security programs” in some of the poorest places in the world. In 2005 FRB implemented 56 overseas programs in 30 countries. (more…)

Help available in saving historic bridges

June 1, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Traill County’s imperiled historic bridges may still find salvation.
In conversations with N.D. Department of Transportation officials this week, the Banner learned that two bridges in the county are on the state’s “short list” for restoration and preservation — the Viking Bridge, the oldest bridge in the state located north of Portland, and the Caledonia Bridge, which crosses the Goose River in the heart of the village of Caledonia.
Bob Christensen, cultural resources section leader, noted that both bridges are “under consideration” by the state. (more…)

May 30, 1957 — Plans to build a new National Guard armory in Hillsboro suffered another setback when architectural drawings for proposed armories in Hillsboro and Mayville were rejected by officials in Washington, D.C. The veto came as a surprise to local officials since the plans were nearly identical to blueprints approved for a new armory in Lisbon, N.D. Without approval from the federal government, construction was not likely to begin as scheduled during the summer. The official reason for the rejection was that federal funds for new armories had been depleted. Hillsboro officials believed that federal funds had been allocated months ago and planned to resubmit the proposal for consideration at the start of the new fiscal year — July 1. (more…)
