The good, the bad and the ugly . . . but it’s ours.
ND200 brings business to our doorstep. It also divides our town in half. That’s the good and the bad. The “ugly” is equally obvious — the state highway, our city street, is in desperate need of repair.
The debate over the proposed reconstruction of ND 200 has raged on for six months. Just as the street divides our community into east and west sides of town, the debate has divided our city commission and put our community at odds with a state construction plan. (more…)

Warm and dry.

The memories are only 10 years old. The Flood of the Century — I remember it like it was yesterday . . . and like it was a century ago.
I recall the cold — and the fear — when the power went out. My kids were seven, five and three at the time and I tried not to be scared for their sake. Drawing them close by instinct, I huddled with them under a mountain of blankets — warm and cozy. We made a game of it. I prayed that the power — by the grace of God and Nodak — would flicker to life and we’d be warm again.
When the much anticipated flooding started, I had stayed close to home. My husband Mark was on the sandbag crews. He had a pair of rubber boots standing at the ready by the back door when he left the house to help — whenever the siren blew. He and the boots would return later wet and muddy. (more…)

Don Imus could push Global Warming to the back pages?
Even the Iraq War was second fiddle to our friend Imus this week.
Imus isn’t the news in North Dakota, however.
We’d still rather talk about the weather.
Imus who?
Nine out of 10 people in North Dakota had no idea who Don Imus was before this week. (more…)

April 11, 1957 — Arrested just hours after robbing two Hillsboro grocery stores, a remorseful suspect pled guilty just four days later and was sentenced to a year at the state prison farm. The late night bungling burglar had left a trail of footprints in freshly fallen snow for local police to follow and netted just $32, six packs of cigarettes and a wrist watch in his crime wave.
Hillsboro Civic and Commerce hosted the annual Mr. and Mrs. Community Night at the HHS auditorium. A free show by The Elksters and a free supper were part of the festivities.
A wet snowfall dashed hopes for an early spring. (more…)

Beehive buzzing in Reynolds

By ANNA AUSTIN
The buzz around Reynolds: the Beehive.
It’s the place to be.
The café-lounge, a bright yellow rectangular building on Main Street, cannot be missed when driving through town. Owned by Alan and Rita Butler of Reynolds, it is the only place in town to get a hot meal or a beer.
Alan Butler, 37, is originally from East Grand Forks, and Rita, 32, attended Hillsboro High School. The couple, who bought the Beehive from Tim Lindstrom, have been the proud owners for over three years. (more…)

Spring storms of ‘97 paralyze region

In bold, black letters three inches tall, the April 12, 1997 Hillsboro Banner headline screamed the magnitude of that spring’s disasters: “April’s Power — Flood, Ice, Blizzard.”
One photograph showed a sandbag brigade standing in knee-deep floodwaters fortifying a dike around a home in Hillsboro Woodland’s Park April 4. After weeks of preparation, the floodgates had opened April 2 and 3. The rivers rose quickly but we were ready — or so we believed. (more…)

Conflicting figures reflected
in state’s sales tax report
Taxable sales for the fourth quarter of last year were down in Traill County and its two largest cities, according to the North Dakota Tax Commissioner’s office in Bismarck.
Compared to the fourth quarter of 2005, Trail County businesses reported a 4.07 percent decrease in taxable sales during October, November and December of 2006.
The difference of $331,942 was softened by the quarterly report’s taxable sales and purchases, which indicated Traill had an increase of 8 percent, or $674,689. The county in the 2006 fourth quarter reported taxable sales and purchases of more than $9.1 million, compared to $8,433,725 in 2005. (more…)
